Filleting without a clue & celebrating our daily bread :-D
Had fish today… and if you do something, go all out (that’s my “philosophy”). Bought four small whole fresh (caught that day) fishes yesterday in a Moroccan fish shop and the owner had no clue how to translate this particular species, so I just bought them “blind” thinking I’d figure it out for myself. Got tired of googling aimlessly, gave up on “naming” my fishies and set about filleting them without any notions of how to do so. Feeling bold and carefree, I skipped the “watch a tutorial on youtube” step of the procedure, grabbed a pointy knife and fiddled about until I finally managed to remove (most of) the guts and spine. Left the skin on, baked for a few minutes, added steamed veggies, herbs & spices and presto! Still got some scales caught between my teeth but who cares, it was delish!
In other awesome news: I (also quite boldly) went into my local Pain Quotidien to ask for a job and immediately got an impromptu interview for a full-time position as shift leader. Whaa?? (Me = no experience in this sector whatsoever). Yup, my personality sparked in just the right ways I guess. And they were thrilled to learn that I’m a newbie nutrition student starting September, and already went out of their way to accommodate my employment with my once-a-week compulsory laboratory class in Ghent (which is a 2,5 hour train ride away). I was originally going for the part-time job as waiter, at the very bottom of the PQ hierarchy, but they apparently my enthusiastic ramblings about my love affair with organic healthy food, elaborate breakfasts and freshly home-baked bread got their minds rolling :-) Couldn’t be more pleased! Well, anyway, the phone call for the training/test day will be coming later this week so… fingers crossed!!
